To preface this post, it is important to note that the Karma Charts that are posted to NexusAtlas are, in my opinion, very outdated in the sense that they still measure Karma based on "points" which were equal to "number of players Mentored," and since Mentor no longer serves its Karma-gaining purpose, this needs to be overhauled.  With the smallest measurable Karma-giving unit being a Pirate Coin, measuring levels in terms of Pirate Coins makes far more sense.  With that said, below is a breakdown of the upper levels of the "Karma Chart"

<b>Lower Levels

I created this chart by selling pirate coins into karma, 1 at a time, and having my karma read after each coin. It's hard to say for certain, but I'd guess that mentors gave the
equivalent of 8 pirate coins of karma. I don't yet have
accurate numbers  for Rat/Cat because it's hard to lose a
small amount without going into Snake.
Note: This list notes how many Pirate Coins are in each level, NOT how many coins TOTAL it takes to reach that level.

Snake      =  ?
Rat        =  ?
Cat        =  4 coins (estimate)
Squirrel   =  5 coins
Rabbit     =  5 coins
Dog        =  7 coins
Monkey     =  8 coins
Ox         = 10 coins
Bear       = 20 coins
Tiger      = 30 coins
Dragon     = 35 coins
Spirit     = 75 coins

<b>Angel Tear and Beyond

After extensive spending and mathing and other things, I have a data point that hopefully puts to bed the myths that Pirate Coins give WAY more karma than we think they do.

After being Spirit Karma for a long time, I continually used 1 pirate coin at a time to get karma until my karma changed from Spirit to Angel Tear.  At this point, I started spending large chunks of Pirate Coins for karma and periodically checked my Karma reading again, while also trying to make a Faerie Light.

As far as we know, a Faerie Light can be made from Mentoring a newbie character when your karma is in some upper-band within Angel Tear karma.  After spending Pirate Coins, I had the following results.

   Coint Spent          Karma Rank          Faerie Light?
-----------------------------------------------------------

      60                 Angel Tear             No

      30                 Angel Tear             No

      10                 Angel Tear             No

      20                   Angel               Yes!

In summary, the following data.

     Total Coins Spent: 120 Pirate Coins worth of Karma
     Karma between AT and Angel: 6 "points"
<b>      Implied Karma Points per Pirate Coin: 1/20th (0.05)

Also, we can assume the "upper band" of Angel Tear that allows you to make a Faerie Light is rather tight.  In this case, we can assume it is around 1 point from Angel... just over 15% from Angel karma.  So unless you are very close to Angel, it's usually a waste to check and see if you can make a Faerie Light just yet, because that band is not wide.

This conclusion supports the idea that Pirate Coins are much less effective when it comes to boosting Karma than many have thought, with some people claiming they are worth 1/8th or 1/10th, or (the highest estimate I had heard) 1/12th of a point per coin.  These results suggest it is closer to double those estimates.

So before you go spending tons of money on Looted Treasures and Motherloads, make sure you are confident you are close to reaching the next level and only need that final boost.
